Dramatic Oberliga final: Brixen and Weinstraße are relegated

The 2022/23 league season is history – and it couldn’t have ended more dramatically. Ultimately it is Weinstraße Süd and Brixen who have to go to the state league after a nerve-wracking last matchday.

The starting position before the last match day was hard to beat in terms of explosiveness, as the relegation battle promised pure excitement. Five teams were hit: Arco, Brixen, St. Pauls, Weinstraße Süd and Lana. At the end of the 90 minutes it is clear: Arco, Brixen and Weinstraße Süd have to go to the state league.

Above all, the relegation of SSV Brixen has something historical about it: the Eisacktaler have been playing in the top league continuously for 23 years, and now they are going down a division for the first time in this millennium. The decisive factor for this was the 0-1 defeat against Obermais.

Bertoldi's gala is free

The scenes that took place in Kurtatsch were dramatic. Weinstraße Süd got off to a dream start in the direct duel against Lana in front of an impressive crowd, as exceptional striker Fabio Bertoldi first scored with a powerful left-footed shot (10th) and then with a brilliant chip from 16 meters (24th). With this result, the Unterlanders would have at least saved themselves into a playoff.

But after the break, Lana woke up from his lethargy and came back impressively. First it was Paolo Basile who scored the goal after a Daniele Zingale assist, before Alessandro Guerra was completely forgotten at the second post and was able to score 2-2. It stayed that way until the end, which means: Weinstraße Süd was relegated, Lana stayed in the class.

There was also a celebration at the Rungghof in Eppan, where St. Pauls secured their place in the league in a spectacular game. The guests from Comano took the lead 1-0 after just one minute, but striker Thomas Mair (48th) and Simon Oberrauch (62nd) turned the match around after the break. Comano equalized in the final phase, but then Oliver Rohrer headed his Paulsner into luck shortly before the end, crowning the blue-white comeback, not just in this game, but in the entire second half of the season. After the first series, St. Pauls were last, but now they are saved.
