Officially to Spain: Gündogan leaves Manchester City

Ilkay Gündogan's move to FC Barcelona is perfect. The Spanish champions announced the signing of the 32-year-old German international on Monday.

Gündogan is leaving Manchester City on a free transfer after winning the treble of the English championship, cup victory and Champions League triumph. The midfielder will receive a two-year contract with the Catalans, valid until June 30, 2025, with the option for a further season.

According to the Catalans, the fixed transfer fee is 400 million euros. Gündogan moved from Borussia Dortmund to Man City in the summer of 2016. “It was a joy and a privilege for me to have been part of Manchester City over the past few years,” said Gündogan, who crowned his time at the club with coach Pep Guardiola as captain by winning the European premier class. “This club has made all my dreams come true and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity,” Gündogan said in a statement from the English Premier League club.

Barcelona coach Xavi in particular is said to have convinced him to move to the Catalans. At Barça, Gündogan is now playing together again with his former BVB colleague Robert Lewandowski.
