#1: The root system 4-3-1-2 Since Vecchi took over the helm at FC Südtirol, the 4-4-2 with a midfield diamond has been established as the core system. Every now and then the three-man chain from Paolo Zanetti's successful era was seen, but recently hardly any more. The South Tyrolean squad is designed for the 4-3-1-2, where Vecchi has two players in every position. This turned out to be 4-5-1 on the pitch - due to the very defensive role of the wingers. The white and red coach wanted to limit the effectiveness of the opposing full-backs, which he did very well. The problem was that the wingers Matteo Rover and Davide Voltan were hardly able to counterattack due to their deep positioning. The ways forward were simply very wide, with Voltan standing a little higher (and not quite sticking to the outside line) than Rover. Only in Bolzano since January, but already a key player: Davide Voltan.

Conclusion: The 4-5-1 worked very well defensively, but the FCS players had too much ground in front of them in the forward game. The team lost its effectiveness. So the coach modified his alignment again. #3: With two free spirits in 4-3-2-1 With winter newcomer Davide Voltan, FC Südtirol has grabbed a real top player. The plan was for the 25-year-old from Padua to compete with Daniele Casiraghi for the place behind the leaders. It quickly became apparent that both were far too good for the bank. Instead of creating a luxury problem for himself, Vecchi put the two “difference players” together in the starting line-up against Sambenedettese – a perfectly right decision.

With Voltan and Casiraghi behind the only lead, FC Südtirol formed in a 4-3-2-1. The formation is also known as the Tannenbaum system because on paper it has the shape of a small conifer. The advantages of two “tens” on the field? You are very variable, forward and when playing against the ball. The disadvantage? Both players have to be strong runners and very tactically disciplined. Against Sambenettese, Voltan (he likes to drift to the left) and Casiraghi occupied the space between the opposing defense and the midfield, which repeatedly posed major problems for the brands. A symbol of flexibility: Hannes Fink can hold all positions in midfield.

If Vecchi sticks to the Christmas tree, then the question arises about the alternatives to the two tens. On paper they are missing, but there are interesting candidates in Hannes Fink and Marco Beccaro. Nermin Karic, or even Manuel Fiwickeler and Rover, could also be an option. Whatever Vecchi decides in the next games, one thing is certain: FC Südtirol is now more flexible than ever before and also has the necessary personnel to embarrass the competition with various tactical variants.
