It's time to take stock: a decent season for FC Südtirol has come to a cruel end in Monza. SportNews takes a closer look at the squad and knows who is among the winners and losers of the 2018/2019 season.

The facts first: FC Südtirol finished the season in 6th place in a strong Serie C. Away they were the third best team, in the home table the White Reds only came in 9th place. After finishing 10th in the first half of the season, the FCS fought its way up 4 places in the second half of the season. With 33 goals conceded, the FCS has the second best defense in the league (after champions Pordenone with 32 goals conceded).

The winners of the FCS season

Fabian Tait and Alessandro Fabbri FC Südtirol has a full-back duo that is unrivaled in Serie C. The two were a weapon, especially in the forward game - and also very flexible. Both could move into midfield or play the classic winger. At 26 years old, Tait's professional future is open to him. It is quite possible that there will soon be another South Tyrolean in a higher league. Paul Zanetti The coach was able to confirm his fabulous debut in professional football. Last year everything ran like clockwork, this year Zanetti has shown that he can also overcome crises. The 36-year-old is a great coaching talent, with strengths in in-game coaching and tactical flexibility. A type of coach who will also be in high demand in higher leagues in the coming years. Danilo Pasqualoni The 24-year-old winter newcomer is the surprise man at FC Südtirol. Whether in a three-man or four-man chain, whether as a central or full-back – the Roman could be relied on. His contract is expiring, and sports director Paolo Bravo would do well to keep the defender in Bolzano. Tommaso Morosini If the 27-year-old doesn't make it to Serie B in the summer, when will he? Morosini was the best FCS player of the season in all areas. When it came down to it in the playoffs, the bald Lombard not only showed off his fighting heart, but also a great sense of responsibility. 14 scorer points do the rest. The wingers Two players perfect for the attacking wing: When Zanetti switched to a 4-3-3 system, Gianluca Turchetta and Gabriel Lunetta really got going. FC Südtirol was able to hide the striker problem quite well for a while. The goal balance is okay, but could be improved: Turchetta scored six goals this season, Lunetta (he only arrived in the winter) scored four times. While the identification figure Turchetta should stay, loan player Lunetta is already gone. The relegated FCS team The young defenders With the exception of Mario Ierardi (21), the young defenders played no role in the playoffs. Nicolò Casale (21) probably has the most potential, but was unable to confirm his strong approach after a thigh injury and the switch to a back four. Fabio Della Giovanna (22) came to Bolzano with a lot of praise, but couldn't even begin to confirm it. Alessandro Mattioli (21) and Luca Oneto (22) also didn't make it past benchwarmer status. Luca Berardocco The midfield strategist first lost his regular place to Francesco De Rose and then lost confidence in his abilities. The 28-year-old has all the qualities to be an outstanding player in Serie C. Because he has extended his contract, we hope that he can build on his old performance again next year. The strikers Caio De Cenco and Niccolò Romero remained pale exactly when it mattered most. In both playoff games, the FCS forwards were not a factor. De Cenco struggled with bad luck on the crossbar and his goalless streak, which has lasted since December 26th. Winter newcomer Romero started well, but then declined sharply. The bottom line is that they both scored five times for the FCS – not enough. The squad width in midfield When captain Hannes Fink was eliminated in the playoffs, Tait had to help out in midfield. This shows that there were no alternatives behind the regular players. Strange, because last year Zanetti often had a luxury problem in midfield: Renny Smith, Michael Cia or Luca Bertoni - all players with starting eleven potential who often had to make do with the bench. That was different this season. Stefano Antezza is lacking class (only three times in the starting line-up) and why winter newcomer Andrea Romanò was brought in remains a mystery.
