FC Südtirol says goodbye to the title race

Now it's official: FC Südtirol will not be promoted directly to Serie B this year. While the White Reds gave up in the Drususstadion on Sunday evening, Padova and Perugia won their games.

That was it for FC Südtirol in the title fight. After the defeat against Triestina (2:3), the home game against Cesena could not be won either. The visitors canceled out Daniele Casiraghi's opening goal with a penalty that was more than just flattering. While nothing is at stake for FC Südtirol in the last league game on Sunday (15 p.m.), Padova and Perugia, with the same points, are dueling in a long-distance battle for the title and the associated promotion to Serie B.

Two penalty goals were decisive in the first half. First, Casiraghi gave the White-Reds the lead (33'), then Mattia Bortolusso (he is the league's top scorer with 15 goals) equalized for the visitors from Emilia-Romagna (39'). While FC Südtirol's penalty - after a handball by Giacomo Zecca - was a clear matter, things became confusing shortly afterwards. After another penalty whistle, this time against the home team, a thick crowd of players formed around referee Valerio Maranesi. Rightly so, because Jan Polak's supposed penalty foul was not there. Bortolusso didn't care, he gave Poluzzi no chance with a powerful shot under the crossbar. The South Tyroleans noticed the absence of vice-captain Fabian Tait (he remained on the bench). In addition, left-back Alessandro Fabbri left early with a muscle injury (38th). Simone Davi, Kevin Vinetot and Hamza El Kaouakibi sat stricken in the stands. Instead, Davide Voltan returned to the starting line-up. In the 31st minute, Michele Nardi made a brilliant save to prevent the winter newcomer from scoring, who attempted a shot at the far corner after a wonderful move over Casiraghi. Celebrations at Cesena after the penalty goal: The guests are guaranteed a place in the playoffs.

Manuel Filehner and Nermin Karic had the best chances of scoring the FCS winning goal. The signee first narrowly missed a cross (56th) and then shot a volley over the Cesena goal from twelve meters. Karic also found a good shot opportunity, but he hesitated for a moment too long and was blocked (60th). On the other hand, Giacomo Poluzzi stood out when he reacted strongly against Zecca (63'). In the end, no further goals were scored, meaning FC Südtirol's dream of winning the championship was over.

The White Reds end the season in third place and can neither move up nor down in the table on the last matchday against Vis Pesaro. FC Südtirol will play its first playoff game on Sunday, May 3th.
