Thousands celebrate a real running festival at Lake Reschen

2800 runners, 300 volunteers and countless spectators made the 23rd Reschenseelauf a sporting event in a class of its own.

Countless sports enthusiasts made their way up to Lake Reschen on Saturday to take part in the spectacular running event with start and finish in Graun. The children's runs started shortly after midday, then the handbikers and Nordic walkers got their start. The focus, however, went to the participants of the main run, who tackled the 17 kilometer long circumnavigation of the lake at 25 p.m. sharp in midsummer temperatures of 15,3 degrees and bright sunshine.

The fastest of the 2800 participants was a German: 29-year-old Konstantin Wedel from Nuremberg stopped the timekeeping at 48:09,7 minutes. He was clearly better than the rest of the field. Wedel's victory was by no means a surprise, as he has already won the Reschenseelauf twice and also set the current course record in 2019 in 47.23 minutes.

Wedel's first pursuer, Michael Hofer from Deutschnofen, had to pull away early, but he kept the entire field in check until he returned to the old Grauner church tower and took second place. The 28-year-old crossed the finish line immediately ahead of the experienced Trentino trail runner Daniele Felicetti.

Premiere victory for women

Meanwhile, Tereza Hrochova clearly left her mark on the women's race. The Czech was in a class of her own in her first ever participation at Lake Reschen and achieved victory in an extremely strong time of 55.49,2 minutes. A South Tyrolean trio fought for the places behind: Greta Haselrieder took second place, followed by Sarah Giomi, who snatched third place from Julia Kuen with a strong finish.

As darkness fell, not only the athletes on the podium were able to draw a satisfied conclusion, but also many of the participants and visitors, and primarily the OK team around Gerald Burger, who made a significant contribution to this running festival.
