U18 Italian Championship: Silver for Stephanie Schöpf

Stephanie Schöpf made people sit up and take notice with an extremely strong performance at the U18 Italian Indoor Championships in Ancona. The shot putter from Lana was named runner-up in Italy in Marche.

Among the hundreds of athletes who made the journey to central Italy were six South Tyroleans. The two Lanan twins Stephanie and Frederic Schöpf, the Bruneckers Greta Amhof and Alexander Mayr as well as the Eisacktaler Nicolas Filehner and Maximilian Springeth from Neumarkt.

Six years ago, in 2018, pole vaulter Nathalie Kofler won the last South Tyrolean medal in the U18 indoor championships. Now her teammate Stephanie Schöpf achieved the same feat. The 15-year-old from Lana, who was crowned U16 Italian shot put champion in October last year, also made a splash in the U18 class on Sunday and was crowned Italian vice champion. The daughter of Gerti Bacher and Karl Schöpf achieved 13.36 m (new best) on her penultimate, fifth attempt, which meant second place behind Anita Nalesso. The athlete from Treviso won the “Tricolore” with a strong 2 m, while Elisa Dozio (14.39) from Lecco completed the podium.

Her twin brother Frederic, on the other hand, had to settle for 6.57th and 60th place in the long jump (8.77 m) and the 13 m hurdles (37 seconds). The 800 m runner Alexander Mayr from Bruneck presented himself well, coming tenth with a new personal best time of 1:58.72 minutes. The Neumarkt high jumper Maximilian Springeth (10 m) also came in 1.90th.

The title fights in Ancona didn't go quite as planned for Greta Amhof and Nicolas Filehner. The U18 debutante from SSV Bruneck took 5.31th place in the long jump with 17 m. The athlete from SG Eisacktal timed the 60 m in 7.19 seconds (30th), and in the 60 m hurdles (8.61), Filehner finished 25th.
