Weissteiner, Obrist and Kirchler collect a complete set of medals

With full stands and well-organized title fights in the Raiffeisen Arena in Brixen, around 2000 spectators were able to celebrate a complete set of South Tyrolean medals. As hoped, Silvia Weissteiner won the gold medal in the 5000 m. In the absence of the other two Olympic participants Elena Romagnolo and Nadia Ejjafini, the 32-year-old had an easy time on the way to her 16th Italian championship title. After 3000 m she simply left her competitors standing. Weissteiner's last five laps looked like laps of honor. Weissteiner won her Olympic general championship in 15:50.15. Together with Alex Schwazer, she was officially nominated for London 2012 today.

Christian Obrist's opponents in the 800 m run were warned, because the 31-year-old from Brixen's sprint strength is feared. Favorite Giordano Benedetti and Yassine El Houdni kept the pace high to make Obrist tired after the 1500 m run the day before. Benedetti achieved an almost safe victory in 1:48.68. Obrist bit his teeth: thanks to his sprinting ability, he snatched the silver medal from El Houdni in the very last meter and was extremely satisfied with that. Obrist needed 1:49.01 for the double stadium lap, 5/100 less than El Houdni.

Last year, six-time Italian discus champion Hannes Kirchler was disappointed that his winning streak was broken. Kirchler won silver back then. This year the joy of winning bronze was huge. "Since I'm physically exhausted, I haven't trained since June 20th. That's why today's bronze medal comes as a surprise. The fact that I managed the decisive throw in the last attempt rounds off the whole thing," said Kirchler. For the 33-year-old from Meran, it was the eleventh medal in a row (6-1-4) in national title fights.

Marco Colombo also showed a good performance. The man from Bolzano took fifth place in the final of the 400 m hurdles in 52.64 seconds. The title in this discipline went to Josè Benccosme. The 20-year-old qualified for the Olympic Games at the last moment with a time of 49.33 seconds. Bencosme won bronze at the 2009 Youth World Championships in Brixen. In addition to Bencosme, high jumper Gianmarc Tamberi (20) also jumped on the Olympic bandwagon at the last moment with 2.31 m. The highest-class competition was the men's triple jump with three athletes over 17 m. Daniele Greco (17.67 m) prevailed against European champion Fabrizio Donato (17.52 m).

South Tyrol won a total of four medals at the title fights in Brixen. If you include the titles of the half-South Tyrolean Simona La Mantia and the South Tyrolean Paolo Dal Molin, there were even six. “I could never have dreamed of more,” said state association president Armin Bonamico.
