Fifth victory for master drivers Werner Weiss and Bernd Hornetz

“The boys simply have great regeneration. But second overall is also okay. Our first priority is overall victory in the master class,” says Werner Weiss. “We were the fastest on the day twice and that’s a great thing.”

The Masters winners completed the fifth and shortest stage from Livigno over 111,57 km and 2.748 meters in altitude in 3:30:43 hours. On the dreaded Mortirolo Pass with an average gradient of 18%, Weiss and Hornetz were already three and a half minutes behind Willi Herbst and Johannes Berndl. By the time they reached the finish, their gap grew to 4.33 minutes. Nevertheless, they were able to extend their lead over their pursuers in the category standings to 16 minutes.

“Tomorrow we’re going home,” says Werner Weiss. “I live only three kilometers from the finish line in Kaltern; “It would of course be nice to be the first to cross the finish line.” After two difficult stages, the highlight of this year's Schwalbe Tour Transalp powered by Sigma follows tomorrow: the queen stage over four passes, 3.092 meters in altitude and 140,77 kilometers. After the start in Ponte di Legno, the first effort awaits the participants, the climb to the Passo Tonale with a beautiful panorama of the Presanella glaciers. This is followed by a long, enjoyable descent into Val di Sole (Sulzberg), past Ossana, Dimaro and Malé. After a gentle climb through the orchards of Livo and Rumo, we face the only tough climb of the day, the short but steep Brezer Joch. Back down to Fondo on Nonsberg we head back to South Tyrol to the flat Gampen Pass, a first on the Schwalbe Tour Transalp. After that there is no real pass, but the journey from Tisens via Andrian, Missian and Eppan to Kaltern is still quite something: through the vineyards, the route leads through the only underpass on the wine route. Finally, we continue briefly uphill along the cycle path to the finish in Kaltern.

Fifth victory for master drivers Werner Weiss and Bernd Hornetz

Werner Weiss and Bernd Hornetz won in the master category for the fifth time, but in the duel for the overall ranking in all categories they lost 4.33 minutes to Willi Herbst and Johannes Berndl, who are 20 years younger and are today's fastest riders from Germany.
