Overall World Cup victory: Fabian Rabensteiner at the top

Fabian Rabensteiner reached a big milestone in his career on Wednesday. The Villandro native was crowned overall World Cup winner in the mountain bike marathon in Snowshoe, USA.

The last time a marathon World Cup season was held was around 15 years ago. Since then, the long-distance specialists have always competed in a World Series. In the new edition, of all people, a South Tyrolean was the best. Fabian Rabensteiner defended his lead on Wednesday in the last of four stages.

A 33th place in the USA was enough for the 5-year-old. Rabensteiner needed a time of 104:4 hours to cover the total 39.28 kilometers. The victory went to the German Simon Stiebjahn, who was a good minute faster. The previously second-placed Colombian Hector Leonardo Paez had to settle for 10th place in the final stage.

Rabensteiner has been a model of consistency this season. The South Tyrolean landed on the podium twice (1st and 3rd place), once in 9th place and once in 5th place.
