Veronika Widmann races into the top ten in the USA

The South Tyrolean downhiller Veronika Widmann was in action at the Mountain Bike World Cup in Snowshoe (West Virginia) on Saturday. And quite successfully.

In Snowshoe, where Fabian Rabensteiner was crowned overall marathon World Cup winner on Thursday, Widmann didn't have an easy time of it at first. After coming tenth in the qualifying, she just slipped into the decisive run in tenth place in the semi-finals. A mishap with a pedal left her in doubt about taking part in the final.

The 30-year-old from Tramin showed her entire class there at times on Saturday. With a good start, she quickly moved up in the rankings and ended up in eighth place.

Victory in the penultimate World Cup stage went to the Frenchwoman Marine Cabirou, who relegated Nina Hoffmann (Germany) and Valentina Häll (Austria) to second and third place. Gloria Scarsi took fifth place as the best Italian.

The World Cup program in Snowshoe will conclude on Sunday with the cross-country competitions.
