Two roommates beam at the Stelvio Pass

The 46th Giro delle Dolomiti continued on Wednesday with the third stage. While Julia Jedilhauser triumphed in the women's category, there was an interesting double victory in the men's category.

After the starting signal was fired in Prad, the timed section was immediately on the agenda. The Giro delle Dolomiti also had a star participant in the third stage, former professional cyclist Filippo Pozzato. But someone else cycled into the limelight: Daan Vermeulen, like the day before, completed the chrono fastest (1:26.36,82 hours) on the Sellaronda. This was a tough one on Wednesday, as it went from Prad to the Stelvio Pass, located 2757 meters above sea level.

“At the start of the chrono it was slow, so I picked up the pace and immediately gained a big gap. I slacked off a bit in the middle section, so that the competition was back on me at the end. So I gave it my all again and now took the lead in the overall standings,” said the Belgian happily. The fact that his roommate Mathieu Decock ended up in second place (1:27.13,12) made them even more happy. The Spaniard Iraitz Goñi Diaz came in third (1:27.30,91), the best Italian time was delivered by Marco Uslenghi in fourth (1:28.07,88). Directly behind him, the German Florian Albecker, who had been the overall leader until then, crossed the finish line.

Everyelhauser's lead is out of the question

In the women's race, Juliaäßelhauser has a clear overall victory. The German also won the third stage on the Stelvio Pass by over 16 minutes and is virtually uncatchable in the overall classification. With a time of 1:42.12,14 hours, the Oberdorfer also achieved 24th place in the entire field of participants.

“My goal today was not to overexert myself so that I would still be fit for the last two stages. That worked too. I am very satisfied,” said the winner after arriving on the Stelvio. Three other Germans crossed the finish line behind Jederelhauser. Carola Skarabela came in second with a time of 1:58.19,92 hours, Susanne Lummer came third (2:03.22,09) and Christine Schwenk crossed the finish line in fourth place (2:03.23,31).

After the timed section, the third stage, sponsored by Glurns Marketing, continued to the Umbrail Pass on the border between Switzerland and Italy. From there the Münstertal was targeted before heading back to Vinschgau to Glurns at the end of the stage. The journey home from the small town of Vinschgau to Bolzano was taken by bus.

Fourth stage on Thursday

On Thursday the cycle tour continues with the fourth stage towards Fedaia Pass. A total of 147,3 kilometers and 2812 meters of altitude have to be completed. From Bolzano, the participants climb the Karerpass and then cycle across the Fassa Valley to Penia. The timed section (7,2 km/499 hm), which ends at Lake Fedaia at the foot of the Marmolada, also begins there. The way back also goes over the Carezza Pass, then over the Niger Pass, Tiers, Blumau and, last but not least, Bolzano.
