Next Wimbledon victory! Sinner senses his big opportunity

Will this Wimbledon tournament be Jannik Sinner's big hit? After this Sunday at the latest, there are some indications of this. The 21-year-old has ditched his next opponent and is now heading into the quarter-finals against a blatant underdog.

It was by no means his best tennis that Jannik Sinner offered late on Sunday afternoon on Court 1, the second largest stadium in Wimbledon. And yet: He easily defeated Daniel Galan (ATP 85) 7:6, 6:4, 6:3 and reached the quarterfinals for the second time in a row. Surprisingly, it's not Denis Shapovalov waiting there, but the next crystal-clear outsider, Roman Safiullin.

In the match against Galan, Sinner experienced probably the trickiest moments at this year's Grand Slam tournament on the outskirts of London for over an hour and a half. His counterpart from Colombia seemed accurate and even inspired at times, but with the world number eight from South Tyrol, a lot of things didn't come together properly - apart from the serve. With his tough service, he finally took the first set 7:4 in the tiebreak.

Sinner's dispute with the referee

But Sinner continued to seem nervous, arguing with himself, then long and vehemently with the referee and finally with his opponent's serve game. The Sexten player was only able to use the whopping 15th breakball in this game, but with this he paved the way to victory. Sinner equalized to 4:4 and then landed seven games in a row. The third set only lasted a good half hour, then Sinner's round of XNUMX victory was secured.

Sinner himself knows how important this success was and at the same time how great his chance is at this year's Wimbledon tournament. Last year he had to play against the current world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the round of 85, only to then lose out in the quarter-finals against the eventual tournament winner Novak Djokovic, but this season there are comparatively simple hurdles in his way on the sacred turf. After his win against world number 92. Galan Sinner now faces Roman Safiullin in the third to last lap. This is listed at position XNUMX in the ATP computer.

The next Outside is already waiting

The 25-year-old Russian had never made it to the third round of a Grand Slam tournament and had never been in the main draw at Wimbledon. But woe betide anyone who underestimates Safiullin. Now, of all things, the knot has broken for him at the most important tennis tournament in the world. On Sunday he impressively eliminated Canadian Denis Shapovalov (ATP 26) 3:6, 6:3, 6:1, 6:3 and caused a huge sensation. He is the first Wimbledon debutant since Nick Kyrgios in 2014 to make it to the quarterfinals straight away. There the Russian will face a duel with Italy's high-flyer Jannik Sinner on Tuesday.
