Sabalenka: No political questions at Wimbledon

The Belarusian tennis player Aryna Sabalenka does not want to be distracted by questions about the war in Ukraine at Wimbledon this year.

The world number two Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus has announced that she will not answer any questions about political topics during the grass classic in Wimbledon. “I’m here to talk about tennis,” said Sabalenka (25) on Saturday in the run-up to the third Grand Slam tournament of the season. “If they have any political questions, they can ask the WTA or the tournament. They can give you the transcripts with my answers from the previous tournaments,” Sabalenka said.

The world number two did not speak to journalists twice in a row after games at the French Open in Paris. “For my own mental health and well-being, I decided to remove myself from this situation today and the tournament supported me in this decision,” Sabalenka was quoted as saying in a written translation.

There had previously been several critical questions about their position on the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. Among other things, she said that she would end the war if she could.
