Top biathlete is pregnant: “Almost cheesy”

The Austrian Ski Association, which has recently been called Ski Austria, recently announced the squad composition for the new season. One prominent name was missing from the biathlon squad: Katharina Komatz (born Innerhofer) is nowhere to be found. There's a good reason for this: she's pregnant.

“We’re really excited,” the 32-year-old said in an interview with Krone quoted. We, that means Katharina Komatz and her husband David Komatz, who is also a successful biathlete and won silver in the single mixed relay at the last World Championships in Oberhof. Meanwhile, Katharina has secured a place in the history books because in 2014 she became the first Austrian woman to ever win a biathlon World Cup race.

First the wedding, then the baby Now the family happiness of the two biathletes is made perfect. Katharina and David only said yes last summer, and now the joy of having a baby follows. “It's almost a bit cheesy, because it's like in the movie: first get married, then have a baby,” said the biathlete, who has known about the pregnancy since January but has continued to compete in World Cup races. “Of course I checked it with the doctors and it wasn’t a problem. I always felt very comfortable and the baby played along.”

In terms of sport, things haven't been going as planned for Katharina Komatz recently. She was looking for her form last winter and even tried out the cross-country skiing World Cup. It is uncertain whether the 32-year-old will return to the sports stage after the birth of her child. “I have to see what it's like after the birth, whether the fire for biathlon still burns and whether those around me are also on board. “So I don’t know yet whether I will continue my career,” she says Krone .
