Sudden resignation: A ski star has had enough

A great skiing career is coming to an end: Norwegian Ragnhild Mowinckel has announced her sudden retirement on social media - and in an emotional way.

Mowinckel announced the end of her career in a short video: “This will be my last season. I already made this decision before my victory in Cortina. I'm incredibly proud of my career," explained the 31-year-old, who was fighting back tears of joy: "I'm still happy about my decision. I don't know what's coming next. But I'm excited about what's to come in the next few years. There are so many possibilities."

Mowinckel won a total of four World Cup races in her career - in three different disciplines (giant slalom, super-G, and downhill). The Norwegian also won two bronze medals at the World Championships. Mowinckel also celebrated two silver medals at the 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang.

However, her career was repeatedly plagued by serious injuries and setbacks. When she announced her resignation, Mowinckel seemed almost relaxed. She was still among the world's best this year, as her downhill victory at the end of January in Cortina showed. After the season, a new chapter awaits the Scandinavian. Numerous ski colleagues and companions commented on her post on social media, which underlines her popularity in the scene.
