Tears from Shiffrin: “I just want to call Aleks again”

Mikaela Shiffrin celebrated one of the most emotional victories of her career on Tuesday evening. After that, all she had to think about was her boyfriend.

Decided for the fifth time Mikaela Shiffrin won the night slalom in Flachau on Tuesday evening. She put her great rival Petra Vlhova in her place, collected the highest prize money in the ski circuit (76.350 euros) and extended her lead in the overall World Cup. And yet after the race, the ski queen's thoughts only revolved around one thing: her friend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde.

After his horror fall on Saturday in Wengen, he had to be taken to the hospital in Bern and undergo surgery there. Kilde not only gave the ski world a big scare, but also his sweetheart Mikaela. The American, who missed the last race weekend in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee due to illness, immediately drove to Bern to support her “Aleks” at his bedside.

This is also why Shiffrin said after her victory on Tuesday: “The last few days felt like I had lived a whole life.” The 94-time World Cup winner could see that the situation was affecting her. The American had to fight back tears in interviews. “Those were really emotional days. “It doesn’t make you feel good to see the love of your life hitting the net straight ahead at 120 km/h,” she said.

A phone call with the sweetheart
