Best in qualifying: Yanick Gunsch surprises everyone

The Ski Cross World Cup is stopping in Bakuriani (Georgia) this weekend. A young South Tyrolean caused quite a stir.

The ski crossers had to do a lot of work on Friday. Two qualifying runs for the World Cup took place in Bakuriani on Saturday and Sunday (each at 8 a.m. CET). Yanick Gunsch showed a lot in the second run.

After the Vinschger ski crosser had confidently mastered the qualification for the first race, he came up trumps in the second qualifying run for Sunday's competition. Gunsch raced to first place with the fastest time in the field!

A memorable day

Even though it was “only” a qualification, this result is memorable for the 27-year-old. For Gunsch, 12th place was the best qualifying result so far, and 21st place appears to be his best mark in a World Cup race.

In general, the Azzurri were very strong in Bakuriani's second qualifying run. Federico Tomasoni achieved the fourth best time, Dominik Zuech from Lanan ended up in sixth place, Simone Deromedis came seventh.

The first World Cup race will take place on Saturday at 8 a.m. (CET), and the second competition will take place at the same time the following day. Particular attention must be paid to Yanick Gunsch.
