Green light for the Inter Alps Hockey League (IAHL)

Last week, the seven Serie A Lega clubs met in Bolzano and decided in a joint meeting to have one in the coming season to compete in the cross-border championship with teams from Austria and Slovenia . The clubs had been working towards this for several months in numerous meetings and discussions with the Austrian and Slovenian associations.

On the way there, Rittner Buam, HC Pustertal, WSV Sterzing, HC Gröden, Asiago, Cortina and Fassa have now overcome another big hurdle. This week the National Olympic Committee (CONI) addressed the issue. There was a green light from Rome and the project was considered good. However, it was also stipulated that only those clubs that competed in Serie A in the 2015/16 season and the winner of Serie B are allowed to take part in the new, cross-border championship. That is HC Meran Junior. HC Neumarkt, which had expressed vague interest in playing in the new league, is left out. As far as sports jurisdiction is concerned, the DOPS is responsible for all matters on the ice, while the Italian sports judges are supposed to deal with all issues off the ice. The protocol in question has already been sent to the Italian Ice Sports Federation (FISG).

How is the Italian champion chosen?

One of the issues that still needs to be resolved in the coming weeks is the awarding of the Italian championship title. Here the FISG had originally assumed that the CONI would have to decide how the “Scudetto” could be played. The CONI now played the ball back. It is a matter that the association has to regulate.

There are currently three suggestions: Italian champions are the best Italian team in the new league - that is solution number one. A second possibility would be that only the duels between the Italian teams would be held in a separate table and the best team in this separate ranking would be crowned champions. And the third suggestion is to hold your own final tournament.

A new name is coming

So nothing stands in the way of the new championship, which was previously traded under the working title EBEL2. However, the championship will most likely get a new name. FISG President Andrea Gios has never made a secret of the fact that he doesn't necessarily like the name EBEL2. As was leaked on Thursday, the cross-border championship with the INL clubs from Austria, teams from Slovenia and the Serie A clubs (and, if interested, HC Meran) could be called IAHL, i.e. Inter Alps Hockey League.

The name probably doesn't matter to the clubs anyway. It is much more important to them that there is a cross-border championship. Registrations close on May 10th.

The EBEL2 will most likely be called IAHL. And the National Olympic Committee (CONI) approved the project at a meeting, which means there should no longer be any major hurdles for the Serie A clubs. According to the Italian Ice Sports Association (FISG), HC Meran Junior is also eligible to play.
