This HC Bozen is a top team. That much has been certain since Friday evening. In a rousing, at times high-class showdown with the sharks, the foxes bit hard and secured their ninth victory en suite with a score of 4:2. The time at the beginning of the season when the HCB was a shadow of its former self has been forgotten.
For a long time, the people of Bolzano had difficulty creating clear scoring chances in the fast-paced game. But they went to work with a lot of hardness and waited until the Innsbruck team, who only had to go into overtime in the Champions League round of 16 against Lukko on Wednesday in Finland, began to lose their strength. Then a man made a big appearance: Mike Halmo.
The 32-year-old crowd favorite with NHL experience initially put up a wild fight and then became the undisputed man of the match as a double goalscorer and two-time goal assister. It was a show like no other! In addition to Halmo, Dustin Gazley (2 goals) and goalie Niklas Svedberg shone, who stood in the way of Innsbruck's rolling attacks fearlessly, quickly and calmly.
The Halmo evening in time lapse
Wild brawl | Goals have been in short supply for a long time, but both teams let their fists do the talking. Mike Halmo fights with Innsbruck's Senna Peeters, at the same time Dylan Di Perna and Jan Lattner exchange punches in the jaw. |
Halmo punches and hits | In the starting third, Halmo let his fists do the talking, and in the 37th minute his killer instinct as a goalscorer flashed through. In the power play he completed a wonderful power play relay to make it 1:1. Gordon Green had previously given the HCI the lead. |
Gazley's brainwave | At the beginning of the final period, the HCB took the lead for the first time - thanks to Dustin Gazley, who reacted quickest after a shot at the boards, played the puck to goalkeeper Evan Buitenhuis' pad and somehow found its way into the goal - 2:1! |
Halmo, who else? | Halmo puts the crowning touch on his evening! In the 53rd minute he completed the one-man show with a cracking shot into the top corner. It's 3:1. Innsbruck was able to shorten the score again and subsequently create several top chances, but Gazley put the lid on the game with an empty-net goal two minutes before the end. And who provided the template? Mike Halmo! |
With this victory, HC Bozen remains on the heels of its arch rivals from Bruneck - a week before the derby in the Intercable Arena. The wolves are lagging behind their victory on Friday evening in Klagenfurt still four points ahead of the HCB in the last fixed playoff place.
