Varane, Kane & Co.: The SportNews top eleven

Led by Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic and a 3-4-3 system, has SportNews decided on the following eleven players in the World Cup top eleven. In addition to many big names in world football, one or two outsiders have also made it into our team.

Raphael Varane (France) Four-time Champions League winner, Spanish champion, cup winner and now world champion. At the age of 1,91, the 25 meter tall central defender has already won almost everything there is to win in world football. At the World Cup, the Real defender finally proved that he is one of the best central defenders in the world. Domagoj Vida (Croatia) The defensive shooting star of the World Cup – at 29 years old. The Besiktas professional was the constant in the Croatian defense, scoring points with tough tackling and a strong start to the game. The World Cup could have opened the doors to a top international league for him. mittelfeld Kieran Trippier (England) The 27-year-old is one of the winners in the England squad. At the age of 22, he was still with the Man City reserve team and was an absolute pillar of the “Three Lions” in Russia. It's a shame for England that his wonderful free-kick goal in the semi-final against Russia wasn't rewarded with a place in the final. Luka Modric (Croatia) Is the Real professional currently the best player in the world? We think: yes! Modric is extremely consistent, shows hardly any weaknesses and is a textbook midfield strategist. The 32-year-old Modric, who is only 1,72 meters tall, is a calm captain with nerves of steel. This is proven not only by his two goals, but above all by the penalty thriller against Russia.

N`golo Kantè (France) In addition to Modric, we are using Kantè in central midfield. The only 1,68 meter tall clearer was one of the key players for France. Five years ago, the long-distance runner was still playing in the 3rd French league. Now he is world champion – a football fairy tale. Diego Laxalt (Uruguay) The South Americans’ “Duracell male” was one of the big surprises in Russia. The 25-year-old left-footer was only a reserve at the start of the World Cup, then fought for a regular place and impressed with extremely strong performances on the wing. It will be difficult for his club Genoa to keep him. Attack Kylian Mbappe (France) It was already clear before the World Cup that the 19-year-old was a good footballer. After all, PSG cost his services 135 million euros. In addition to his four goals, the 1,78 meter man was particularly impressive with his strong dribbling and incredible starts. Mbappè has not yet reached the end of his development. One thing seems certain: the Frenchman has world star potential – and is the youngest world champion since Giuseppe Bergomi in 1982.

Harry Kane (England) In the end, it wasn't enough for the British to achieve the big hit, i.e. the World Cup title. Also because he hasn't scored since the round of 6. What was particularly impressive was the way the Chelsea professional led his Belgians to third place. He will leave his mark on world football in the coming years. Trainer Zlatko Dalic (Croatia) Totally unknown before the World Cup, now on everyone's lips. Before the 51-year-old joined the Croatian national team, he worked on the Arabian Peninsula for eight years. He took over Croatia at the most inopportune time (with one qualifying matchday to go, their participation in the World Cup was in the balance), but he led the team through the play-offs to Russia. There, Dalic showed that he is not only a strong tactician, but can also take tough action and put the team spirit above the rest (Nikola Kalinic will remember). The fact that he was denied the crowning glory of the World Cup title does not detract from his strong performance.
