Great sadness for Jannik Sinner: His aunt is dead

Jannik Sinner recently dedicated his victory at the US Open to her, but now Margith Sinner has died surrounded by her family. The tennis star is hit hard by the news.

There was a special bond between Jannik Sinner and his Aunt Meggi, as everyone called her. She used to accompany the now 23-year-old to tennis training and ski races, and the two spent a lot of time together.

This is also why the world's best tennis player spontaneously dedicated his triumph at the US Open to her. At the victory ceremony in New York earlier this month, Sinner said: "She's not feeling well at the moment and I don't know how much longer I'll have her in my life. It's nice that I can share this moment with her."

Margith Sinner née Rauchegger (†)

When Sinner returned home from the US Open ten days ago, he paid his aunt a visit. It was to be the last. Margith Sinner died at home in Niederdorf on Saturday at the age of 56. She was the sister of Jannik Sinner's mother Siglinde and leaves behind her husband and a son. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday at 14 p.m. in the parish church in Niederdorf.

Sinner received in Beijing

Jannik Sinner is currently mourning the loss of his aunt in China. He only arrived in Beijing at the weekend, where he will attempt to repeat his tournament victory from last year in the high-profile ATP 500 competition starting Thursday. In the Middle Kingdom, the man from Sexten was already greeted at the airport by countless fans. He patiently stood by for selfies and autographs and surprised many people with greetings in Chinese.
