A year ago, Jannik Sinner made himself immortal in Italy: The Sextner led the Azzurri to their first Davis Cup victory in 47 years. The euphoria that Sinner triggered back then continues to this day - in fact, it has even grown a lot stronger after his two Grand Slam victories and his triumph at the ATP Finals. Now the Pustertal superstar wants to cause a sensation again and defend the Davis Cup title with Italy in Malaga, Spain.

The foundation for this will be laid on Thursday, if Italy does not meet Argentina in the quarter-finals before 17 p.m. The tennis stars from the boot-shaped country are the clear favorites going into the match, after all Argentina's best player Sebastian Baez is "only" ranked 27th in the world rankings. The Azzurri have two players from the top 1 in their ranks, Sinner (ATP 17) and Lorenzo Musetti (ATP 20). Who exactly will play against whom will only be clear shortly before the start of the match on Thursday. It remains to be seen whether Italy's captain Filippo Volandri will also rely on Jannik Sinner in the doubles.

A funny Sinner joke

In addition to Sinner and Musetti, the squad also includes doubles specialists Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli as well as former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini. Berrettini also recently made an amusing joke that caused a lot of laughter on social media.



On Sunday, the Davis Cup teams were presented in Malaga. The Azzurri also posed on the red carpet - but without Sinner, who was still playing at the ATP Finals in Turin at the time. Berrettini posted a video on Instagram showing the Azzurri in Malaga and added Sinner to the picture with a photo montage. In that photo, the Sextner is holding the winner's trophy of the ATP Finals. "Jannik Sinner forgot his suit," wrote Berrettini, amusing thousands of tennis fans. A nice tribute to the world number 1 - and a sign that the chemistry is right with the Azzurri.
