Shanghai: Sinner impresses in opening match

Jannik Sinner continues his impressive season and is once again one of the big favorites in Shanghai. On Saturday morning he won his first game at the Masters 1000 tournament in impressive fashion.

Jannik Sinner is on the hunt for trophies again. On Wednesday, the South Tyrolean had a dramatic final in Beijing against Carlos Alcaraz, and on Saturday morning (CEST) he was already back on the court of another Chinese metropolis. At the Masters 1000 in Shanghai, the 23-year-old has his sights set on his seventh title of the year, with the Japanese Taro Daniel (ATP 93) representing the first hurdle. Despite the latest doping scandal The world number 1 played impressively again, proved her strong form and swept the Japanese 6:1, 6:4 off the court in eastern China.

Sinner's first match in Shanghai did not make many stories. The fact was that the world number 1 was playing number 93 - and this balance of power was reflected on the blue hard court. Two breaks in the first set and one in the second meant a relatively quiet day at work for the South Tyrolean. In total, he only needed 1 hour and 19 minutes to advance to the next round. The 23-year-old served strongly and played his usual powerful baseline game, which Daniel was simply not up to, especially in the first set. The Japanese player also did not manage to score a single break point.

After the quick match, a satisfied Sinner smiled into the camera: "I feel good here. It's different than in Beijing, but I like playing here. I served well, moved well, and I'm looking forward to the next game. I have a partly new team, and we still have to get used to each other, but things are already going very well between us. Today was a successful start to the tournament."

The Look ahead

In the next round on Sunday, Jannik Sinner will face Tomas Etcheverry (ATP 37) from Argentina, who defeated Botic van de Zandschulp 7:6(5), 3:6 and 7:5. A look into the future shows that on the way to the final in Shanghai, Daniil Medvedev could be waiting for the South Tyrolean in the quarter-finals and Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals if they all win their respective matches. The Spaniard triumphed on Center Court in the match before Sinner's with 6:2, 6:2 against the Chinese Juncheng Shang (ATP 51).
