Triumph in Malaga: Italy’s tennis women are the best

Azure blue celebrations in Spain: The Italians easily beat Slovakia in the grand final of the Billie Jean King Cup in Malaga on Wednesday.

Lucia Bronzetti and Jasmine Paolini secured a comfortable 2-0 victory. After losing to Canada in the final last year, the Italians left nothing to chance against Slovakia. The Azzurre lived up to their role as favorites on Wednesday evening and were already the winners after the two singles matches.

In the first duel, Bronzetti (WTA-78) had no trouble against Viktoria Hruncakova (238) and won 6:2,6:4. The result in the second singles was even clearer.

While Rebecca Sramkova (43) was able to avoid being knocked out in the semi-finals by Great Britain on Tuesday, the in-form Slovakian had no chance in the duel between the two 28-year-olds against Paolini and suffered her first defeat in the competition. The world number four won clearly 6:2,6:1.

Fifth triumph in the BJK Kup

While Slovakia missed out on their second title in the team competition after 2002, the Italians celebrated their fifth triumph. They had already won the Billie Jean King Cup, the equivalent of the Davis Cup for men, in 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2013.
