Canucks win big game

The Vancouver Canucks won the top game in the North American ice hockey league against the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 (1-0, 1-1, 1-0) on Saturday (local time).

Pacific Division leaders Vancouver extended their lead over Edmonton to five points. The Oilers still have one more game to play in the main round, but they can no longer overtake the Canucks on their own. Nevertheless, the Oilers had already secured home advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Detroit Red Wings can continue to dream of the playoffs. The Red Wings won 5:4 (4:1, 0:3, 0:0) after overtime against the Toronto Maple Leafs and now have 87 points. The Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers have the same number; based on direct comparison, the Capitals currently occupy the last wildcard spot. The Pittsburgh Penguins with 86 points are also still in the playoff race.

Detroit scored four goals in just under ten minutes against Toronto in the first period to take a 4-1 lead, and the visitors conceded three goals in the third period. Dylan Larkin scored the winning goal from the power play after 41 seconds in overtime, “one of the most important goals of my career,” as the 27-year-old striker said.
