Open statement from SV Kaltern rothoblaas

“Ten days ago, SV Kaltern rothoblaas, together with the other South Tyrolean INL clubs, were completely unexpectedly informed by an email from the FISG that they were no longer allowed to take part in the INL championship. Surprising because there had been no discussions or written inquiries about this to SV Kaltern rothoblaas up to that point. This is also surprising because it is believed that there is a three-year contract between the Austrian and Italian associations and that all four South Tyrolean clubs have already registered for the INL for this season.

After a few phone calls with the top of the association and after a meeting of the South Tyrolean INL clubs, the reason for this measure was explained: They wanted to save Italian ice hockey and all clubs had to make their contribution to this. They want to create a big, strong league and only allow four foreign reinforcements (last year's request from the then second division clubs) in order to promote Italian players and to be able to rehabilitate the financially struggling Italian clubs. It was also reiterated that the Italian association would bear full responsibility and the consequences towards the Austrian association.

In a first reaction, the South Tyrolean INL clubs explained to the association that they could not register for the upcoming Italian championship because they were already registered for the INL championship. They asked the Italian association to clarify this situation clearly and in writing. This must happen within July 15th as this is the registration deadline for the upcoming Italian Championship.

SV Kaltern rothoblaas is pleased that the association's leadership has been replaced as a result of this year's elections and would like to express its trust in the new board and support it in implementing its visions. But that is why SV Kaltern rothoblaas is currently in an unpleasant situation. And the club now has to bear the consequences for mistakes and bad decisions made by other clubs. Because SV Kaltern rothoblaas has had more homegrown players than almost any other club as regular players in its own ranks for a long time, has only ever spent the money that was available to it and has been debt-free for years. For these basic principles, it was also accepted that we had not been so successful in sport in recent years. This was also a reason to register for the INL championship because you belong there financially and athletically.

SV Kaltern rothoblaas is also a club with a handshake quality, which adheres to agreements and is aware of its - albeit small - role and responsibility. That's why in the current situation, caught between the INL commitment and the responsibility to support the new association leadership and their ideas, one doesn't feel comfortable at all and is criticized for having hastily created unclear facts here and without preliminary discussions. They accepted the risk of breaking a lot of porcelain, destroying their own reputation and destroying cooperation with the Austrian clubs at all levels (and perhaps even in all leagues) for years to come. Albeit with laudable intentions for Italian ice hockey.

SV Kaltern rothoblaas is of the opinion that this unpleasant situation could have been avoided with a few conversations. If one had explored for which clubs participation in Elite.A was more attractive than participation in the INL, two clubs could possibly have remained in the INL and two clubs could have moved to Elite.A. A compromise that would not have affected the agreement between FISG AND ÖEHV, would have left both leagues able to act and would have given the four South Tyrolean INL clubs the choice to choose the league that really suits their sporting and financial situation better.

The question must also be allowed as to what measures will be taken by the FISG (this year or next year) to bring HC Bozen from the Ebel back into the first Italian league. Because if all clubs really have to pay their dues for the future of Italian ice hockey, HC Bozen cannot escape this responsibility - it is and was the constant benchmark for all other clubs in Italy.

SV Kaltern rothoblaas sincerely hopes that some questions will have been clarified by July 15th, that the Italian association will make its decisions thoughtfully and far-sightedly and communicate them in writing and that there will be many more constructive discussions between everyone involved. Last season, SV Kaltern rothoblaas found itself in the middle of the INL. This year, with the same budget, they have a similar starting position and have therefore also registered for the INL. It will be incredibly harder for this small club to assert itself in a higher league (Italian Serie A) or to become more than just a provider of points. At the same time, every South Tyrolean team that does not play against Kaltern loses its own attractiveness and thus the audience.

For the reasons mentioned above, being enrolled in the INL at this time and wanting to keep one's word, respecting the decisions of the new association leadership and not being able to simply ignore the INL ban, for reasons of wanting to remain athletically attractive - for players and for spectators - the club has no choice but to closely observe how the other clubs behave, continue discussions and wait for possible compromise proposals from the FISG.
