Record and 8th victory: Maurer celebrates at the Red Bull X-Alps

Chrigel Maurer (SUI1) continued his winning streak in the world's toughest adventure race and took the title for the eighth time - and in the fastest time in the race's 20-year history. The 40-year-old athlete crossed the finish line in just 6 days, 6 hours and 1 minute after an extraordinary race that challenged him like never before: “It's incredible to be here after such a short time and some challenging moments. When I crossed the main ridge with my team it was incredible.”

The lead changed hands several times between different athletes throughout the race, but in the end it was the Swiss who gained a lead in the final days. According to former Red Bull “He has proven once again that in the mountains, in open terrain, he simply makes the best decisions and is the best in the world - period.”

Race director Ferdinand Vogel says he is also an amazingly fit mountain athlete with a natural feel for the best strategic route decisions: “First of all, I would like to congratulate Maurer on another outstanding performance. That was once again an incredible performance! He makes decisions based on his gut and his instincts are incredibly good because he has so much experience and prepares for every situation.”

2nd place is at stake All eyes are now on the battle for second and third place, where four athletes are fighting for position within a few kilometers: Patrick von Känel (SUI2), Pal Takats (HUN), Damien Lacaze (FRA2), Maxime Pinot (FRA1) and Simon Oberrauner (AUT1), with a few others not far behind. The South Tyrolean Aaron Durogati can also still hope for a top placement. He is currently in 8th position, around 67 kilometers from the finish and 30 kilometers behind Lacaze in second place. Meanwhile, Tobias Großrubatscher is in 2th place on Saturday evening. The South Tyrolean is 16 kilometers away from the finish.

Meanwhile, Austrian Eli Egger (AUT4) is trying to become the first female athlete in the history of Red Bull X-Alps to reach the finish line. “Your personal goal in this race was to reach Mont Blanc, but now it’s about getting to the finish,” Vogel added.

With more than five days of racing still to go, it looks like a record number of athletes will reach the finish. The previous record dates back to 2015, when 19 athletes achieved it.

Christian “Chrigel” Maurer reached the finish in Zell am See, Austria, in six days and six hours - the fastest time ever recorded in the 20-year history of Red Bull X-Alps. It was also the Swiss's eighth triumph.
