Investigations against ex-soccer star Eto'o

Cameroon's former football star Samuel Eto'o is facing serious allegations in his office as association president of the West African country.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced that several Cameroonian officials have asked for an investigation into the 42-year-old Eto'o. He is said to have “behaved inappropriately”. The statement does not provide any further details, but according to CAF the allegations are said to be serious. Eto'o's lawyer announced on social media that his client felt denounced and reserved the right to take legal action.

The CAF now wants to examine the allegations against Eto'o. According to the AP news agency, the allegations also concern Eto'o's role as an ambassador for a sports betting company. At least one club has complained to the Cameroonian association that the deal violates the institution's code of conduct.

During his active time as a professional, Eto'o was considered a folk hero in Cameroon. He won the Champions League with FC Barcelona and Inter Milan, and the Africa Cup of Nations with the national team in 2000 and 2002. The star striker also took part in four World Cup finals. In 2021, Eto'o became president of the Cameroon football association Fecafoot.
