Former Juve goalkeeper Szczesny ends career

Polish record goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny ends his football career.

The 34-year-old announced this on Instagram on Tuesday. The 84-time team player recently reached an agreement with Juventus Turin on an early termination of his contract. "Even though my body is still ready for new challenges, my heart is no longer in it. I feel that now is the time to devote all my attention to my family," wrote Szczesny.

Szczesny played 252 competitive matches for Juve, having previously played for Arsenal, AS Roma and Brentford FC. With Juventus he won the Italian championship three times and the cup three times, and with Arsenal he won the FA Cup twice.

In recent months, a move to Saudi Arabia was also on the table, but instead Szczesny left the "Old Lady" a year before his contract expired. At the 2024 European Championship in Germany, Szczesny was also in goal for the 1:3 defeat in the group match against Austria. He took part in four European Championships and two World Cups with Poland.

"I left Warsaw, my hometown, in June 2006 to join Arsenal with a dream - to make a living from football," added Szczesny. "I had no idea that this would be the start of a journey of a lifetime. Everything I have and everything I am is thanks to football."
