His McLaren racing team failed in its attempt to challenge the five-second penalty imposed, which ultimately put him in fourth place, behind world championship leader Max Verstappen (3rd). The race stewards announced this on Friday evening in Mexico City, also via video, after a hearing that had taken place a few hours earlier.
Norris received the penalty last Sunday in Austin after a duel with Red Bull's Verstappen. As a result, he dropped from third to fourth place and was a further three points behind the three-time Red Bull champion. If he had finished third and Verstappen fourth, Norris would have made up three points.
Overall standings: Norris 57 points behind Verstappen
Currently, before the Grand Prix in Mexico City this Sunday (21.00 p.m. CET), the 24-year-old Brit has 57 points less than the Dutchman, who is three years older. According to the race stewards, McLaren was unable to provide any new evidence. This would have been necessary in order to have the opportunity to appeal against the penalty. "There is no new element," they said in their statement.Norris had overtaken Verstappen on the outside of a corner and left the track - just like Verstappen. Norris had come back onto the track before his rival and, in the opinion of the stewards, had gained an advantage for which they punished with a time penalty.
