Farewell victory: Cavendish wins last race

Cycling star Mark Cavendish has won the last race of his career.

The 39-year-old Brit won the Singapore Criterium, which is not very important in sporting terms, and thus said goodbye to almost 20 years as an active professional. Cavendish won the sprint ahead of the Belgians Jasper Philipsen and Arnaud De Lie.

"I'm very emotional right now. On the last five laps I thought, these are the last 15 kilometers of your career. Then I'll be under the devil's rag for the last time," said a visibly moved Cavendish. "I hadn't raced since the Tour de France. I was a bit nervous that I might crash. I really wanted to finish the race. Now I'm looking forward to my career away from the bike."

The day before, the Briton had put an end to all speculation and announced the end of his career. In the months before, Cavendish had always avoided talking specifically about the future.
