Crash at World Championships: Swiss cycling talent in mortal danger

There was a serious crash at the Road Cycling World Championships in Switzerland. Swiss junior rider Muriel Furrer is in critical condition. The World Championships will not be cancelled.

The Road Cycling World Championships in Zurich will continue despite the continued critical condition of Swiss junior rider Muriel Furrer. The world cycling association UCI announced this on Friday.


The decision was made after consultation and with the consent of Furrer's family. "Muriel Furrer's health status remains very critical. The UCI, the Swiss federation and the local organizing committee are extremely concerned," the statement said.

Furrer with serious head injury

The 18-year-old Swiss rider had a serious fall in the junior women's race on Thursday and suffered a serious traumatic brain injury. The fall happened in a forest on the lap on the north side of Lake Zurich, which is used in all road races. According to the UCI, they are still looking for information on how the fall happened. The relevant authorities are conducting investigations.
