Eliminated: Sinner has to pack his bags in Montreal

Jannik Sinner's engine has started to stutter: After the cancellation of the Olympic Games in Paris due to illness, the world number 1 was eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Masters tournament in Montreal.

Jannik Sinner had to admit defeat in the round of the last 8 against Andrey Rublev with 1:2 sets. The Russian, number 8 in the world, won 6:3, 1:6 and 6:2. However, Sinner also had to struggle with hip problems in the third round.

A brief background: Because it rained in Montreal on Friday, Sinner had to play two matches within a few hours the following day. On Saturday evening (CEST), Sinner confidently defeated Alejandro Tabilo (ATP 21) 6:4, 6:3. On the night of Sunday, the South Tyrolean lost the quarter-final against Rublev, which was repeatedly interrupted due to rain. The Russian, by the way, shortened the score to 3:5 in the direct duel with Sinner.

Sinner has thus botched the start of the hard court season. The Pusterer also lost 800 world ranking points because he won the Masters in Toronto at the same time last year. Despite this, Sinner remains in the lead in the live rankings with 310 points ahead of Novak Djokovic. Now Sinner has to recover quickly, because the Masters in Cincinnati will continue next week.

Sinner remains number 1

The draw for the Masters in Cincinnati has already taken place. Sinner received a bye in the first round. The South Tyrolean will then face either Tallon Griekspoor (ATP 40) from the Netherlands or a qualifier. Carlos Alcaraz will also be taking part in the tournament in the US state of Ohio. Sinner was eliminated in the second round there last year and could therefore make up points again.

Alcaraz, third in the world rankings, reached the final in Cincinnati in 2023 and has to defend more points than Sinner. Djokovic, last year's tournament winner, on the other hand, has canceled his participation in Cincinnati after the exertions of the Olympics. Sinner will therefore remain number 1 at least until the US Open.
