President quits: Trouble in South Tyrolean tennis

The new elections were supposed to take place tomorrow, Friday, but they have now been postponed at short notice. The previous regional head, Richard Weißensteiner from Eggental (in office for 12 years, before that head of the South Tyrolean winter sports association FISI), has informed the clubs in a letter (available to the editors) that he will no longer be a candidate. "Despite my commitment and that of my board members Patrick Andergassen, Pietro Baruchello, Davide Carrara and Marion Kostner, we learned a few weeks ago from Roland Sandrin, our board member in Rome, that FITP President Angelo Binaghi no longer wants to support me as national president and is demanding my replacement." Binaghi allegedly wants a younger president. “Behind the scenes there are people who have done dirty work.” Richard Weissensteiner The letter continues: "Unfortunately, there are people who have been doing dirty work behind the scenes and without our knowledge. This has led me to no longer run for office. I really hope that our state committee will continue to be led by people who love the sport of tennis and not by people who are playing political games behind our backs." Sandrin's counterattack Sandrin used to be president of the national association himself, he has been on the FITP board in Rome since 2000 and was confirmed on September 6th for another four years with the most votes. He says: "I don't want to comment on such primitive letters. Nobody told Weißensteiner that he was forbidden from standing for election." Anyone like Weißensteiner who has served three terms as president needs a two-thirds majority in the first round of voting and a quorum of 3 percent plus 50 for the election to be valid, otherwise the elections will be re-advertised and the current president will no longer be allowed to run. According to the statute, the elections must be held by March 1, 31 at the latest.
