Jannik Sinner: “We are a real unit”

Jannik Sinner has written tennis history. The Pusterer led Italy to Davis Cup victory. Even in the hour of triumph, he remains humble, highlights his teammates and thanks his opponents.

After a drought of 47 years, the Azzurri won the Davis Cup in Malaga. Above all, it was Jannik Sinner who helped write this tennis story. With magnificent performances he led his team to the final, where he finally made everything clear on Sunday with a flawless 6:3, 6:0 over Alex De Minaur (Read the detailed SportNews report here).

In the hour of success, Sinner once again shows himself to be modest and humble. He thanked the defeated Australians and spoke of a worthy finale. Immediately after the match, he particularly singled out his teammates: “We are a real unit, each of us can be very happy. Everyone did their best.”

The Azzurri are like a family, “thanks to Volandri (Note: Captain Filippo Volandri) worked perfectly,” said the 22-year-old. It was definitely close. “We were one point away from elimination,” Sinner recalled. By that he meant the game on Saturday against Novak Djokovic. The South Tyrolean was able to fend off 3 match points (SportNews reported) and force a decisive double.

An outstanding year is coming to an end for Sinner and the Tennis Azzurri. “It was an excellent season for us. Ending the year like this gives us all energy for the next season,” explained the Sesto native.
