Despite new video: WTA doubts Peng Shuai's freedom

Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the state newspaper, posted on Twitter Global Times , a short clip purported to show Peng Shuai at the opening of a youth tennis tournament in Beijing on Sunday. You can see how she and other guests are called by name and greeted with applause by the audience. She waves and smiles briefly, but doesn't speak up herself.

At the beginning of November, Peng Shuai accused a top Chinese politician of sexual assault on the social network Weibo. The Chinese woman has not been seen in public since. Already on Friday evening, Chinese state television had allegedly distributed current photos of the tennis star on Twitter. On Saturday, a video recording was distributed - also via Twitter - which is said to show Peng Shuai having dinner with friends in a Beijing restaurant. “This video alone is not enough,” Steve Simon, head of the international women's tennis organization WTA, commented on the restaurant clip. “While it is positive to see her, it remains unclear whether she is free and can make her own decisions.” It is therefore not clear whether she can act without coercion. Simon said he remained concerned about her health and safety and that her allegation of sexual assault was apparently being censored. Because of the affair, the WTA is threatening to completely withdraw the tennis tour from China.

In the past few days, there have been calls all over the world for clarification in the case of the former number one in the doubles world rankings. Even the White House under US President Joe Biden expressed “deep concern”.
