Four South Tyroleans at the ITF tournament in Ortisei

The popular tournament in Ortisei took place for the first time in 1999. The winner back then was Gloria Pizzichini. In Val Gardena they started small, then the tournament grew from year to year and the prize money rose to $2008 in 100.000. Two years later, however, the women had to make way for the men in Ortisei, but then returned in 2015 with a $10.000 tournament.

Pennetta and Wozniacki in the winners list The fact that the tournament has made a name for itself can be seen from the big names that have already won here. US Open winner Flavia Pennetta and the then 17-year-old Caroline Wozniacki, who later became number 1 in the WTA world rankings, are just a few of the well-known stars who won in Val Gardena.

This year the number one seed is the Italian Claudia Giovine. The 26-year-old is currently in 370th place in the world rankings. She achieved her best ranking to date six years ago, when she was 290th. Giovine has won eight $10.000 tournaments so far in her career, including three (Hammamet, Trieste and Santa Margherita di Pula) in this calendar year. The player from Brindisi feels even more comfortable in doubles. With a total of 21 tournament wins, Giovine is a real team player. She also celebrated a victory with Karin Knapp, in 2010 they both won the $50.000 tournament in Venice.

Behind the Slovakian Lenka Jurikova (415), Deborah Chiesa (503) is third in the seeding list. The 20-year-old from Torbole seems to feel particularly comfortable in Ortisei: In March of this year she won the BNL Open here and thus managed to qualify for the “Internazionali d'Italia” in Rome. In doubles she is even the defending champion with Croatian Adrijana Lekaj.

Three other “Azzurre”, Anna-Giulia Remondina, Giorgia Marchetti and Lucia Bronzetti, are also in the main draw thanks to their placement in the WTA computer.

Verena Hofer in the peloton Like local hero Verena Hofer, who received a wild card from the organizer for this tournament. The 19-year-old from Ortisei is currently number 980 in the world and grew up in the tennis hall where the tournament is held.

The wild cards for the qualification, which will be played on Sunday and Monday (December 4th and 5th), go to the three South Tyroleans Jeannine Hopfgartner, Silvia Saccani and Sophie Walzl. Jasmin Ladurner from Merano is missing this year due to injury, while Verena Meliss from Kaltern is not taking part.

The main draw begins on Tuesday, December 6th with the first round games. The singles final will take place on Sunday, December 11th at 14 p.m. Last year, the Italian Georgia Brescia won the final 6:4, 4:6, 6:3 against Kathinka von Deichmann from Liechtenstein after more than two hours of play.
