European Championship medal: Daniel Grassl celebrates in Tallinn

The figure skater from Merano, who... Short program on Wednesday who was still in 5th place, showed his full class in the free skate on Friday and won the silver medal. This is Grassl's first precious metal at a European Championship, after finishing 6th and 4th in previous years.

Grassl showed his enormous technical qualities to the music of Aerosmith (“I Don't Want to Miss a Thing”). In particular, he mastered the jumps excellently and achieved a new personal best with 182,73 points in the free skate. In total, Grassl collected 274,48 points and gained 3 places. After winning this medal, the 19-year-old can also do well at the Olympic Games in Beijing (February 5th to 20th) - even if the competition there will be even stronger.

After the short program, three Russians were in the lead. In the end, only 18-year-old Mark Kondratiuk held his nerve. He was the only one who could outdo Grassl and win gold. The other two Russians, Andrei Mozalev and Evgeni Semenko, came away empty-handed.

Gabriele Frangipani from Bolzano ended up in 238,95th place with 9 points. Like Grassl, he trains in the Würth Arena in Neumarkt with Lorenzo Magri. Maurizio Zandron from Bolzano, starting for Austria, was awarded 193,91 points (17th). Jari Kessler from Kaltern, who represents Croatia, missed qualifying for the free program in 31st place.
