Spectacular touchdown breaks Chiefs' neck again

The Jacksonville Jaguars overturned a 14-point deficit against the Kansas City Chiefs to claim their fourth win of the season. A birthday boy became the celebrated hero.

In the 31-28 loss to the team led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence scored the game-winning touchdown with 23 seconds left in the game—and he did it on his 26th birthday. The Jaguars are now among the NFL's top teams with four wins from five games; no other team has a better record.

Lawrence lost his balance in the decisive moment and fell to the ground after a teammate stepped on his foot. However, the quarterback got up and surprisingly made it to the end zone. "Panic, just panic," Lawrence described his thoughts as he lay on the field. "We were out of timeouts, so I wanted to throw the ball out of bounds to stop the clock. But then there was no one around me."

After falling behind again, the Chiefs still had time to get within range of a field goal, but botched all their plays and suffered their third loss in the fifth game of the season. Last season, their third defeat took much longer to arrive—until the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Lawrence praised the Jaguars' development: "Our process is working, we just have to keep going and get better. We're finding ways to win, and we're doing it against a really good football team tonight."

Chiefs lag behind expectations

The Chiefs, on the other hand, face unusual pressure ahead of their clash with the powerful Detroit Lions next Sunday (local time). The team languishes in third place in the AFC West, behind the Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos, and would currently not qualify for the playoffs—even based on the AFC standings.
