South Tyrol's triathlon jewel takes bronze

Euan De Nigro is one of the top young triathletes – the 21-year-old impressively demonstrated this at the U23 World Championships in Wollongong, Australia.

After a 1,5-kilometer swim, 40 kilometers on the bike, and a 10-kilometer run, the athlete from Sarns near Brixen took third place. The victory in the high-class and fast race went to 20-year-old Briton Oliver Conway with a time of 1:42:54. He beat favorite Marton Kropko, who finished 1:39 minutes behind.

De Nigro took the bronze medal, just 13 seconds behind Kropko. A total of 52 athletes finished, with seven having to abandon the race. De Nigro emerged from the water in 13th place, then shone with the fastest bike time of the field, and also held his own with the leaders on the run. Only the eventual winner, Conway, was in a league of his own on the run course, with a time of 29:35 minutes.

De Nigro completed the race in 31:23 minutes. The bronze medal is a strong signal for the Brixen native that he's on the right track toward the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
