Total dominance: South Tyrolean reaches the final of the Universiade

In this country, the ball is at rest in the top volleyball leagues. Elsewhere, a South Tyrolean is currently battling for a coveted title. Katja Eckl and Italy are in the final of the University Games in Germany.

The 2025 Summer World University Games will take place in five different cities in the Ruhr region and Berlin and are the first since the coronavirus pandemic, after the originally planned 2023 Games in Yekaterinburg were canceled due to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. The 22-year-old Eckl, who plays for top club Conegliano, advanced to the final with Italy on Monday.

Led by Adhuoljok Malual, who scored 18 points, the Azzurre easily defeated hosts Germany 25:20, 25:18, and 25:21. Except for the second set, when the Italians were trailing 4:7 at one point, Eckl and Co. were always in control. However, the Bolzano native, who studies sport at the online university Pegaso, was not selected by head coach Carlo Parisi. Italy has yet to drop a set in the entire tournament (five matches).

Final against Japan

The final will take place on Wednesday at 20 p.m. in Berlin, where, in addition to the volleyball matches, the swimming and diving competitions will also be held. Italy will face Japan, which defeated Brazil 3-2, in the gold medal match.
