Down-to-earth and in love with the mountains: This is Sarah Fahr

"I don't believe that, and I don't want to dwell on it. Volleyball is a team sport, and it's the team that counts. I always give my best; that's what matters," explains the down-to-earth top athlete, who has been chasing titles for Imoco Conegliano since 2020. As the daughter of German parents who moved from Kulmbach (Upper Franconia, 20 km from Bayreuth) to Piombino when Sarah was still a child, the blonde naturally speaks very good German and feels completely at home here. Fahr: "I love the mountains and these magnificent landscapes and also come here on vacation. In Cavalese, we found fantastic conditions. At high altitude, with the fresh air, you simply sleep much better. Lots of fans watched us train, which is good for us." She and her teammates have been riding a unique wave of success since the summer of 2014. On August 11, 2024, Fahr and Co. won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics in Paris. Italy had never won an Olympic medal before. Gold followed on July 27 of this year (a 3-1 victory in the final against Brazil) in the Nations League. Italy has been unbeaten in 29 (!) competitive matches under successful coach Julio Velasco (73). "Now the World Cup is coming up, and we hope this streak continues. We're not thinking about it too much, we're trying to block it out," said the soon-to-be 24-year-old. In fact, the only thing missing from Fahr's medal collection is World Championship gold. Otherwise, she's won everything with the Azzurre and especially with Conegliano – almost multiple times. Fahr comments on this sensational success story: "My partner often points it out to me, but I look ahead and always try to prepare specifically for the next event. I'm only 23 and I want to keep competing for major titles." Two cruciate ligament tears in the same knee The middle blocker experienced the other side of the coin firsthand after the 2021 Tokyo Olympics (where she was eliminated in the quarterfinals). She tore her cruciate ligament twice in the same knee and was off the court for almost 20 months. "It was a difficult time, but it showed me many things. I had to fight, shed tears, and now appreciate everything in everyday life and sports more. I play with even more joy and even more energy," the number 19 of the Italian star ensemble sums it up. Fahr turns 12 on September 24th – the World Cup final in Bangkok is scheduled for September 7th. With fresh mountain air and team spirit, the Azzurre can go far. No other team has a Sarah Fahr in their squad. "We have a strong team; everyone is dedicated to the team's success," Fahr sums it up.
