Next record at the Cool Swim Meeting in Merano

A year ago, the participants groaned under the heat. At the 8th edition of the Cool Swim Meeting, temperatures on Saturday were unusually cool for June, but there was no rain. Short-course European champion Lorenzo Mora was not fazed by this. On Saturday, he set the second meeting record on his favorite event, the 200 m backstroke, in 2.02,32:50 minutes, after having already won the 9.30 m backstroke on Friday in a new Merano record time. The third and final day of competition is scheduled for Sunday (starting at XNUMX:XNUMX a.m.) in the Lido of Merano.

On Saturday, Thomas Ceccon made his first appearance. He skipped the 200 m backstroke and 100 m freestyle and only competed in the 200 m freestyle. With a time of 1.54,39, he ended up in the beaten field. The race was won by Giovanni Caserta in 1.49,50, missing Ceccon's three-year-old meeting record by 0,55 seconds. "It was difficult in these weather conditions, so I can still be happy with my time," said Caserta. Ceccon said: "It's a shame, but I'll start again tomorrow." The world record holder in the 100 m backstroke is registered for three races (100 m backstroke, 100 m butterfly and 200 m individual medley).

The highlight on Saturday was the men's 200 m backstroke. Lorenzo Mora, European champion in the 25 m pool, had no opponents. He wanted to beat Alberto Razzetti's event record (2.04,33) and beat this mark by more than two seconds with 2.02,32. "The temperature was like on the mountain, in excellent conditions I would have managed a much better time," said Mora, who is travelling to Rome on Sunday. Next weekend he wants to secure an Olympic ticket at the Sette Colli Meeting. The 25-year-old showed in Merano that he is in good form.

After winning the 100 m breaststroke on Friday, Lisa Angiolini also won the 50 m breaststroke today. As in the previous year, the European Vice Champion relegated local hero Viviane Graif from SC Meran to second place in 31,77 seconds. Graif made a name for herself with a time of 32,46. The men's 100 m breaststroke was won by Alex Sabattani (FIN Emilia-Romagna) in 28,92.

The 100 m freestyle was on the programme at the end of the second day of competition. In the women's race, Sabrina Weger from SSV Bozen did not miss the opportunity. After the 50 metres on Friday, she also finished first over the double distance in 56,97. In the men's race, there was the eagerly awaited three-way battle between Manuel Frigo, Giovanni Carraro and Leonardo Deplano, the three athletes from the national team. Frigo finished in 49,28, ahead of Carraro (49,89) and Deplano (49,99).

The women's 200 m freestyle went to Alice Guarnieri in 2.04,75. The 50 m butterfly was won by Alice Groppo (28,15) and Elia Codardini, who was only 24,31 hundredths of a second over the event record in 24 despite the inhospitable conditions. After her victory in the 200 m butterfly on Friday, Giada Alzetta also won the 400 m individual medley today in 4.49,53. In the men's event, victory in this race went to Tuscany. Matteo Vasarri was unbeatable in 4.27,66. Sofia Sartori won the 200 m backstroke in 2.19.30. Letizia Gioffredi (16.51,45) and Tommaso Griffante (15.30,09) are the winners in the 1500 m freestyle.
