Giro: Jon Izaguirre celebrates in Pfalzen

The route took the participants from Limone on Lake Garda via Salurn, Bolzano and Brixen to the Pustertal. 23-year-old Jon Izaguirre from the Euskaltel-Euskadi team completed the 173 kilometers fastest. Friulian Alessandro De Marchi took second place, 16 seconds behind. The Dutchman Clement took third place. The top three, together with Mazzanti and Boaro, started a successful breakaway attempt in San Michele, south of Salurn, and were unable to be caught by the peloton on the final climb from Kiens to Pfalzen.

Nevertheless, the Catalan Joaquin Rodriguez defended the pink jersey of the overall leader. But Hesjedal (+0,60 minutes), Basso (+1,22), Tiralongo (+1,26), Kreuziger (+1,27) and Scarponi (+1,36) are still in wait.

17th stage leads through the Val Badia

On Wednesday the Giro d'Italia will once again complete a long section in South Tyrol. After the start in Pfalzen we go via Terento and the Pustertal to the Badia valley. Basso and Co. then have to cross the Valparola, Duran, Forcella Staulanza and Giau passes to Cortina. The classic “Dolomites stage” takes place over 186 stages and could have a decisive impact on the overall ranking.

Giro: Jon Izaguirre celebrates in Pfalzen

The pink caravan has arrived in South Tyrol: The Basque Jon Izaguirre was the first to cross the finish line in Pfalzen and thus secured the 16th stage of the Tour of Italy.
