The South Tyroleans are among the favorites at the MTB Transalp

Laner, Platzgummer and Perkmann

The three-time Transalp winner on a racing bike, Andreas Laner, rides in the Master category in a team with Hansi Grasegger from Greinau, who, together with Walter Platzgummer from Naturns, completed the Alpine crossing five times and became the overall winner in 2005. Walter Platzgummer, however, is tackling the 600 km and 19.000 meters in altitude, as he did last year, with his Trentino partner Silvano Janes. The two are defending champions in the Senior Master category. Meanwhile, Walter Perkmann from Sarn is driving with the German Georg Niggl, with whom he took third place in the overall Senior Master rankings in 2011. Perkmann's partner has already won the Transalp three times together with Ferdinand Ganser.

Professional Master

The favorite master duos include several professional mountain bikers. This time the Trentino native Massimo Debertolis will be competing with Marzio Deho. Deho, former Italian champion and outstanding marathon specialist, took fourth place at the Transalp 2010 with Mirko Celestino. The former marathon world champion from Transacqua, Massimo Debertolis, formed a team with Mike Felderer (Sarntal) and Hannes Pallhuber (Antholz) for the last two editions. Both times he took third place overall, at that time still in the men's category.

Mixed

The strong rider Daniel Jung will be competing in the mixed category. The 28-year-old took third place last year with his German partner Kristina Weber. This year he is driving with Katrin Neumann from Bad Hindelang (D). Jung has already won the Sellaronda Hero (short distance) this year, as well as the 12-hour world championship with his partner Kristina Weber, who is competing in the Transalp in the women's category this year.

Top stars among men

There will be an exciting battle for overall victory among the men this year. This is ensured by the defending champions from Switzerland, Urs Huber and Kenny Looser, then the world number two and youngest winner of the Dolomiti Superbike, marathon specialist Alban Lakata from Lienz (with partner Robert Mennen from Germany), the seven-time Transalp winner Karl Platt and his German compatriot Stefan Sahm as well the former road professional from Liguria, Mirko Celestino, in the team with Luca Ronchi. “It will be particularly difficult this year because there are a lot of new constellations at the start,” says Karl Platt.

More than 1000 amateur cyclists are taking part in the 15th Mountain Bike Transalp. The route leads from Oberammergau via the Tyrolean towns of Imst, Ischgl and Nauders to Scuol in the Engadin. From there we continue to Livigno, Ponte di Legno and Madonna di Campiglio. On the last day, the cycling entourage reached the traditional destination of Riva del Garda after eight stages, 612,89 km and almost 19.000 meters in altitude. The teams consist of teams of two. The competition starts and is evaluated in five categories: men, women, mixed, master (together 80 years old) and senior master (together 100 years old).

The South Tyroleans are among the favorites at the MTB Transalp

The 15th Craft Bike Transalp begins on Saturday in Oberammergau, Bavaria. 13 South Tyroleans are taking part in the spectacular Alpine crossing by mountain bike. The province of Bolzano does not have a stage location this year, but it does have some favorites.
