Widmann fights his way into the final – Azzurra impresses

Just a few days after the end of the Mountain Bike World Championships in Valais, the cycling pros are already heading to the next World Cup this weekend. Downhiller Veronika Widmann reached her goal in Lenzerheide on Friday.

The 32-year-old, who finished 15th at the World Championships in Switzerland, missed out on direct entry to the final, finishing 13th in the first qualifying round. However, she secured her ticket on her second attempt later that afternoon. She finished fourth in the second qualifying round and will thus be in the final on Saturday (13 p.m.) – just like her teammate Gloria Scarsi (15th). Austrian World Champion Valentina Höll won the qualification, ahead of German Nina Hoffmann and Camille Balanche (Switzerland).

In the men's competition, only one Azzurro, Loris Revelli (15th), qualified for the final. French star Loic Bruni secured the qualifying victory, ahead of American Luca Shaw and Australian Luke Meier-Smith.

Corvi wins in the U23

The first mountain bike races also took place on Friday. Swedish rider Jenny Rissveds won the women's short track race. Evie Richards (Great Britain) and Ronja Blöchlinger (Switzerland) also climbed the podium. Greta Seiwald did not compete. Meanwhile, in the U23 category, there was no getting past Valentina Corvi, who celebrated her first cross-country victory after three second-place finishes this season.

In the men's race, French world champion Victor Koretzky relegated his compatriot Adrien Boichis to second place. Dane Simon Andreassen rounded out the podium. Elian Paccagnella of Bolzano withdrew from the U23 category for unknown reasons. Swiss Finn Treudler was crowned the winner.
