The overall lead changed hands on Thursday from Jonas Vingegaard to Norwegian Torstein Träen, who, like Vine, was part of a breakaway group and finished second on the stage. The general classification riders held back for a long time, and late attacks by Giulio Ciccone and Joao Almeida fizzled out.
The chasing group around Vingegaard reached the finish at 1.900 m above sea level more than four minutes after Vine. After a successful attack, the Australian celebrated the 75th victory of the season for the UAE team before the final climb, which had also won the team time trial the day before with Felix Großschartner. However, UAE co-captain Juan Ayuso, who had previously been in second place, had no joy on the first climb, falling far behind. However, Almeida, another rider from the Emirates racing team, is right behind Vingegaard. The Portuguese rider is still eight seconds behind the favored Dane.

The new wearer of the red jersey is 30-year-old outsider Träen, not least due to the passive riding style of the top teams. The Norwegian, who recovered from testicular cancer in 2022 and is part of the Bahraini racing team, leads by 31 seconds over Frenchman Bruno Armirail of the Gall-Team Decathlon. Third is Italian Lorenzo Fortunato (Astana), 1:01 behind. Vingegaard, in fifth place, is 2:33 behind Träen. However, the rankings could change fundamentally again on Friday, when an even more demanding mountain stage with 4.200 meters of elevation gain is scheduled.
