From Scudetto to relegation: pure drama in Serie A

The battle for the Scudetto in Serie A has been postponed to the final matchday. The big decision between Napoli and Inter will take place on Friday evening. Here's all the background information.

With a home win against Cagliari, Napoli would be crowned Italian football champions on Friday evening. If Conte's team doesn't win, Inter would clinch the title with an away win in Como. If both teams end up level on points, there would be a decider at a neutral venue on Monday.

That's why the Scudetto final was brought forward to Friday. As a reminder, Inter will also be battling Paris St. Germain for the Champions League crown next Saturday. The pressure is therefore on Napoli, who have the match point. For their two opponents, Cagliari and Como, there's nothing left to play for in sporting terms, although Inter will face the more in-form opponent on the road.

Napoli coach Antonio Conte would be the first coach to win Serie A with three different teams. He had previously won the Scudetto with Juventus and Inter. In keeping with this, rumors are growing that Conte could return to Turin as coach in the summer.

What else is it about?

On Sunday, Juventus will battle for fourth place in the Champions League in Venice. Roma and Lazio are also still fighting for the coveted European spots. Fiorentina is also still in the draw, while Bologna has already secured a Europa League spot thanks to their cup triumph. AC Milan, on the other hand, comes away empty-handed.

Things are looking bleak for Venezia in the relegation battle. Empoli, Lecce, Parma, and Hellas Verona are also still in the mix. Of this quintet, one team will be relegated to Serie B and play against FC Südtirol. The decision will be made on Sunday evening.
