League games abroad? UEFA is upset

The European Football Union is increasingly critical of the relocation of national club matches abroad.

In a letter to all 55 national associations, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin is said to have urged them to consult with the European governing body beforehand on how the Sports picture reported. According to the statutes, relocation of matches abroad is only permitted with prior approval from UEFA.

The Spanish league plans to play the league match between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami on December 20. In Italy, the Serie A match between Milan and Como is even scheduled to take place in Perth, Australia, on February 6, 2026, due to the Winter Olympics.

Although the relocation of Bundesliga matches is not currently an issue in Germany, Leverkusen's managing director Fernando Carro recently suggested holding the Supercup match abroad, similar to Spain or Italy.
